NICE recommends BfB Labs digital `mental health technology ‘Lumi Nova: Tales of Courage’ for childhood anxiety

We are thrilled to announce that the UK's National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) has recommended Lumi Nova: Tales of Courage, our evidence-based digital mental health technology intervention for anxiety in children and young people.

NICE’s recommendation is testimony to how BfB-Labs is leading the digital transformation of children’s mental health in the UK, helping to embed digital support into standard care pathways. We are deeply committed to improving access and outcomes in children’s mental health using advanced technologies and collaborating closely with end-users, clinicians, commissioners, and programme managers to ensure Lumi Nova is widely accessible and meets the needs of users.

Lumi Nova:Tales of Courage is a digital mental health technology in the form of a studio quality mobile game app for children aged 7-12 years. It has been co-created with children, parents, clinicians, academics and product design experts. It enables instant access to high-quality mental health support combining a fun intergalactic adventure game with psychoeducation and exposure therapy - the NICE -recommended gold standard of treatment for anxiety disorders. Users can self-manage their fears and worries in a safe and fun environment. Practitioners can securely and safely manage users and have access to real-time data and reporting on  engagement, progress, and health outcomes.

NICE’s announcement recommending Lumi Nova is an exciting step forward not just for BFB-Labs but for the wider children’s mental health community. Today in the UK, mental health services are expanding, but not fast enough to meet rising needs, leaving many children and young people with limited or no support.

Lumi Nova:Tales of Courage delivers value at every point in the care pathway including triaging and waitlist management, early intervention, community care, and as an add-on for children who are already receiving specialist mental health support.  As a self-guided app, its flexibility benefits users who can use the app from any device at a time and location of their choosing. For frontline teams, it can reduce pressures as it does not require constant clinical supervision. Lumi Nova: Tales of Courage is free for end users. It is scalable and can significantly improve access to mental health support and ensures equitable access regardless of location or economic status.
